World Cup Stadium "Sky Car" Gets Stuck

Soccer World Cup host city Durban has been given 60 days to make sure the "sky car" over the top of its Moses Mabhida stadium is safe after it got stuck, SAPA news agency reported on Wednesday.

The stadium is one of the most beautiful of the 10 venues for the June 11 to July 11 tournament in South Africa, and will host a semi-final match.

The sky car can take up to 20 visitors on a 106-metre-high and 350-metre-long arch along the top of the 70,000-seat stadium for views of the city and Indian Ocean.

"The municipality was issued a contravention notice and given 60 days to improve on the things highlighted during the inspection," SAPA quoted labour department chief inspector Thobile Lamati as saying.

The agency said Lamati visited the stadium following media reports and complaints that the car had got stuck while taking people on a trip.

The Times newspaper reported earlier this week that a 63-year-old woman collapsed while trying to walk down the 550 steps to the ground after the car got stuck near the top.
